Option 1: Crop it out
If the text is near an edge — a date stamp in the corner, a caption bar at the bottom — cropping is instant and free.
- Open the photo in Photos and tap Edit.
- Tap the Crop tool and drag the frame edge past the text.
- Tap Done.
Best for: text at the edges. Downside: you lose that part of the picture and change the shape of the image.
Option 2: Use Clean Up in Photos
On iPhones that support Apple Intelligence, Photos includes a Clean Up tool designed to remove distracting objects.
- Open the photo, tap Edit, then Clean Up.
- Brush over the text you want to remove.
- Review the result and tap Done.
Best for: a small word or logo on a simple background. Downside: it is designed for objects, not lines of text, so long sentences or text over detailed patterns can leave smears. It is also not available on every iPhone.
Option 3: Use an AI text remover
A dedicated text remover detects the words for you and regenerates what belongs behind them. Here’s how it works in Qutu:
- Install Qutu from the App Store and open the text editor.
- Choose your photo. Qutu highlights every block of text it finds.
- Tap the block you want to remove and clear the text.
- Generate, then press and hold the result to compare it with the original.
- Save it to your photo library.
Best for: text over backgrounds you want to keep — posters, product shots, screenshots, signs. Bonus: you can type new text in the same step and Qutu matches the original style.
Which should you choose?
| Situation | Best option |
|---|---|
| Date stamp in a corner | Crop |
| One small word on a plain wall | Clean Up or Qutu |
| A full line of text over a pattern or photo | Qutu |
| You want to replace the text, not just delete it | Qutu |
Use it responsibly
Edit images you own or have permission to change, and don’t alter documents, receipts or messages that other people rely on as a record.
